Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine – Disposal Guidance
More good vaccine news on the disposal front.
Based on a preliminary review of currently available data, the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine (NDC: 59676-0580-05) is preservative free and is not EPA RCRA hazardous when discarded by healthcare facilities. This has been also referred to in the news as the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine.
As a best management practice, it is a good idea to incinerate pharmaceuticals. Since this particular drug formulation is not RCRA hazardous, it does not need to be incinerated at a hazardous waste incinerator (TSDF).
- Recommendation: As a best management practice we recommend disposing of all non-hazardous pharmaceuticals through incineration as opposed to other methods such as drain disposal or throwing in the regular trash. Empty vials that once contained this vaccine can be discarded in the regular trash if not prohibited by your solid waste vendor.
We will be updating our system as new information on this COVID-19 vaccine and others become available. Jeff Hollar – President – PharmWaste Technologies, Inc.
